Stand with the people of Appalachia to demand an immediate halt on mountaintop-removal coal mining. Mountaintop removal is a devastating form of mining that blows the tops off mountains, then dumps the toxic waste directly into streams, poisoning downstream wildlife and human communities.

Recent scientific studies have associated mountaintop removal with increased rates of birth defects, cancer clusters and increased mortality rates. Outrageously, the coal industry has responded by calling the studies "bogus" and by blaming the increased incidence of birth defects on inbreeding -- an inaccurate and insulting assertion. When national media called Big Coal out on this astounding insult, the National Mining Association responded by hiring a firm to "debunk" the studies -- the same firm that claimed asbestos isn't harmful and secondhand smoke doesn't cause cancer.

Don't let Big Coal and the politicians in its deep pockets downplay these important studies. Please send the letter below to the Department of Health and Human Services, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and Department of Justice. Urge them to enact an immediate moratorium on mountaintop removal and to launch an investigation into its public-health impacts.
